great video! I’m learning various farming methods, I’ll be combining land, raised bed, container and strawbale gardening (got arthritis in my back) but want to be more self sufficient as I am able.

Can you make a video on how to root cellar your vegies? I dont have a root cellar, but I have an extra room can you explain the ins and outs of that?

Ok heres the deal
dont buy these small bottles just order the gallon size from the company.
also you can actually spray it on the wood or even use a paintbrush. Spraying on the wood is easier just mix with equal parts mineral oil.. so 1 gallon citrus and 1 gallon mineral oil. That should do several beds. ie you only need to spray a small amount on the wood then rub in with cloth.

It’s really nice to grow like this, but dam it’s expensive. I have 8 beds now, 10′x4′. Each cost me about $1000au ($800us) to build and fill. So there is $8000au before i even grew 1 plant…. I had to ask myself how many organic vegies could i buy for $8000? Shit loads… It will take me 127 years of growing to just break even on the investment… Am i nuts????

Well indirectly thats what you might do . if the stuff gets into the ground water it may well get absorbed by your garden plants anyway. and if it gets into the river it could get into your mains water and from there via your sprinkler onto your plants or worse still into your coffee. Wouldn’t it make more sense to preserve the shingles with something less toxic?

Doesn’t look like a well designed garden – Raised beds should be small enough to walk around rather than stand in. Up to 4 foot wide is a good, allowing for all gardening tasks to be performed from outside the raised bed. One of the benefits of a proper raised bed – you will not compact the soil.

We use a few tricks to get through our short growing season here in the UK that a few of you in warmer climates can take advantage of. Over wintering vegetables is one of them, broad beans if you might grow ok there too.

Another trick is cherry, bush type tomatoes. planted out right at the beginning of the season they ripen so fast (being small) that you can be eating them in no time at all.

well, who is more successful today? PJ hasnt had one time in their bands history where they fell on hard times. organic means:
1) mix the soil with 40% organic compost
2) don’t use all this shit stuff out there that say “make your fruit bigger” or something like this
3) the water is the fruit, use drinkable water and you will have good fruits

Thats a very ugly yard. All you should do is determine what area you want to be garden, make a barrier around it, dig 10 inches in the area, take out the weeds & grass, poor any soil (i use organic) then put your plants down in a organize pattern with reasonable space. Cover in dirt & your done. Water day & night

It is easy! The box is bottomless. I recommend a different mixture than what Mel uses. Pet moss is antimicrobial & good, healthy soil is teaming w/ microbes. I recommend the following mixture: 40% compost, 40% coconut fiber, 10% expanded shale, 10% mix of lava sand, green-sand, and alfalfa meal. Also use stone, brick or concrete bricks for your SFG, instead of wood or any other material. Good luck & keep us posted!

Whatever vegetables you like to eat I guess. Some grow easier than others, especially in different climates. Around here melons grow like weeds (I had accidentally grew a patch of watermelons by spitting seeds off my pool deck one summer) , but they probably wouldn’t up North. Check online to find out what “zone” your in, and any gardening website should give more detailed help.

Raised bed gardening is great and attractive. I think row planting is best for large plots and more farm scale stuff. Intensive planting requires a lot of water. True the shade of the leaves holds it in the ground but the close planting causes a lot of competition for water among the plants.

FYI… if you live in Zone 10 like me, where you don’t really get frost, you need to be careful about planting your tomatoes when it’s too hot. I’ve heard that the plants do not fruit as well once the temperature is above a sustained 85ish degrees.

I love SFG, I live in a city and have limited space so this system is wonderful. We have fruitfull crops year rounds thanks to SFG. The only improvment I ask for is translating SFG to crcular barrel type planters because I have 4 of those and would like to maximize their use as well.

We’ve been doing SFG for a couple years now and it is so much better than the old way. Lower costs (especially after getting started), less waste, less water, and a lot less weeding. I spend more time getting my crops ready for the table.

I grew watermelons last year on a standard wooden trellis. They were a variety called sugar baby which are about the size of a cantaloupe and are incredibly sweet. They are the expensive ones that you can find in the grocery stores.
